Principles of Accounting 1/ACCT101
TC3 Course Title and Number: Principles of Accounting 1/ACCT101 Student Audience - Grade level(s): Juniors & Seniors

Course Description:
Students enrolled in the Concurrent Enrollment Course of Accounting 101 will be introduced to the basic accounting concepts and principles for a sole proprietorship with emphasis on the accounting cycle and preparation of financial statements along with their supporting schedules. Students will also learn the purpose of using special journals, subsidiary ledgers, and valuation accounts.
Prerequisites: Successfully completed the first two years of high school math.

Final Grade Determined by:
There will be a comprehensive final given during finals week. This is part of the Outcomes Assessment that the accounting program follows at TC3.
· If a student has a 73% or better as an average before the exam, to keep that average the student must pass the comprehensive exam with at least a 70%.
· If the student scores better on the exam than their average grade before the exam, the grade will be added in with the former grade to potentially give the student a higher average.
· If a student has less than 73% as an average, and does BETTER than 70% on the comprehensive exam, he/she will have this added in to potentially give the student a higher average.
· If the student scores less than 70% on the exam, he/she will receive whatever the average was before the exam.
· A grade of C or better in the course will only be obtained by scoring 70 or higher on the final exam.
Comprehensive Exam for this course will be given during finals week.
All students are required to take TC3’s final exam in Accounting.

Course Objectives:
- Students will learn the basic principles of double-entry accounting for a sole proprietorship pertaining to a service and merchandising business.
- Students will broaden their vocabulary usage pertaining to accounting, theory, and practice in order to communicate effectively in the business world.
- Students will achieve an understanding of the importance of accuracy and efficiency when completing assignments in order to analyze the accounting data in order to make informed business decisions.
- This course will also meet the needs of students who are interested in accounting, business administration, marketing, or other areas which will require them to take an introduction course in accounting, or wish to use this course as an elective.
